District 5 Food and Nutrition Show Results

The District 5 4-H Food and Nutrition Show and Food Challenge were held on February 6, 2010 at Stephen F. Austin University. Cherokee County was represented well in both the Food Show and Food Challenge.

Amanda Rathbun, with the Footbridge 4-H Club) placed 5th in the Senior Division, Fruit and Vegetable Category.

Cherokee County had 3 teams compete in the Food Challenge. The Senior team, comprised of Amanda Rathbun, Carlie Allen, Shelby Watts, and Nikki Wilson placed 3rd. They will advance to the State competition which will be held at A&M University in April.

Team # 2 was comprised of both Juniors and Intermediates. Members of Team #2 were Katey Dickie, Tommy Penn, Emily Arnwine (all with Footbridge 4-H Club) and David Wingard (Lookout 4-H Club). They placed 2nd in the "Junior/Intermediate mixed" division.

Team #1, also comprised of both Juniors/Intermediates, Placed 5th. Team members are Clay Anderson , Myla Greer (both with Cloverleaf 4-H Club), and Kaylie Arnwine (Footbridge 4-H Club)

This was the first year for the Food Challenge to be a competition in the District Food and Nutrition Show. The contest is modeled after competitions on the Food Network’s “Iron
Chef”. It challenges teams of 4-H members to create a dish using only predetermined number of ingredients. From these ingredients, team members must identify & prepare the dish, then make a presentation to the judges.

The presentation will include information about the
serving size, nutritional value & cost of the dish. The 4-H Food Challenge allows members to demonstrate culinary and food safety skills to judges & observers. All of the teams represented Cherokee County well, and we are very proud of them. :-)
