4h_mark2A  POSTER CONTEST

The theme for the 2013 poster contest is “Healthy Holidays”. Five places will be awarded in each age division.

Participants in the poster contest do not have to be entered in the Food Show nor be present to win! No entry fee or pre-registration is required to participate in this contest.

There is no limit to the number of posters that each county can enter; however, each child is limited to one poster.  The poster must be on a poster board that measures 28”x22”.  NO FOAM BOARD OR OTHER MATERIALS PLEASE.  The posters will be judged on creativity and the nutritional message that the poster conveys.  This contest is open to all age divisions.  We will give a ribbon to the top five places in each age division as appropriate.

The following information must be included on the back of each poster:

            Contestant Name:
            County:
            Age Division:

If this information is missing from the poster, it will not be judged.  Please submit a list of entries the day of the event to the Poster Contest Coordinator so that we will have a complete list of entries.

If you have questions regarding the Food show, contact me at the e-mail or phone number below.

All posters are due in the Cherokee County Extension office by Thursday, January 31 @ 5 PM.

Remember that all recipes should follow the Healthy Holidays theme this year but the holiday can be any that we enjoy.  The food categories also have changed in that they are in line with MyPlate: protein, fruits and vegetables, grains and dairy.

The venue for the food challenge will be announced at a later date.  Teams will also want to use the supply box list that is shown at the state web site and then add a blender.  We are still working with several facilities that can provide us with the best accommodations for the Food Challenge contest.

All forms are attached.  Please contact Wendi Green with if you have any questions; 903-683-5416.  Remember that our county deadline to let our office know if you plan to be a part of this contest is:

THURSDAY ~ December 20, 2012

2013 4-H Recipe Rally Overview & Guidelines

In the 4-H Recipe Rally, intermediate and senior 4-H members are challenged with selecting, creating and/or altering a recipe and submitting a video of them preparing the recipe.  The video should highlight the 4-H member demonstrating the preparation of the recipe while also highlighting nutrients, food safety practices, serving size and cost analysis, as well as their inspiration for selection or creation of the recipe.  Entries are submitted online and due by midnight on February 1, 2013.  From there, the top three intermediate and senior 4-H members will be invited to compete in the 4-H Recipe Rally during Texas 4-H Roundup next June.

More information and resources are available on the healthy lifestyles program page.

If you have any questions please contact Wendi Green at the Extension Office.

2012-2013 Food Challange Manual

Please note that the manual reveals a few minor changes and clarifications for this year's contest.

1.  There are NO changes to the Food Challenge categories this year!  For now, they are staying the same.

2.  There is one addition to the supply box list, which includes an electric skillet.  Please note that teams may choose to continue using their hot plate(s); however, an electric skillet, which tends to heat faster, has been added to the supply list.  Teams can easily compete without the electric skillet if they choose to do so or if it is not in their budget to purchase one.

3.  A clarification to the supply list, which indicates that only electric hot plates are allowed.  No gas/propane operated burners are allowed.  This is in line with the Texas 4-H Roundup rules that state, "No firearms, weapons, fireworks, open flamed burners or live ammunition are allowed to be used in any Roundup contest."

4.  Teams may have access to a "pantry" of additional ingredients that may be incorporated into their recipe. The number of additional ingredients a team may get will be determined by contest officials and announced during participant orientation.  With this change, the committee feels that the contest will allow for more creativity among teams, recipes will be customized to the teams liking, and the contest will be more true-to-life (cooking something with what you have in your pantry).

As always, please feel free to contact Wendi Green with any questions you may have about the 4-H Food Challenge.
